The Early Life of Max Immelmann

Max Immelmann was born on September 21, 1890, in Dresden, Germany. He was the son of a wealthy industrialist and grew up in a privileged environment. From an early age, Immelmann displayed a passion for flying and became a skilled pilot.

In 1914, when World War I broke out, Immelmann joined the German Air Service. He quickly distinguished himself as a gifted pilot and was soon promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

Immelmann's Combat Career

Immelmann's first aerial victory came on August 1, 1915, when he shot down a French aircraft over the Vosges Mountains. He went on to claim a total of 15 victories during the war, making him the first German fighter ace.

Immelmann was not only a skilled pilot but also a brilliant tactician. He developed a number of innovative maneuvers that helped him to outmaneuver his opponents. One of his most famous maneuvers was the "Immelmann turn," which allowed him to gain altitude and position himself behind an enemy aircraft.

Immelmann's tactics and skills made him a feared opponent in the air. He became known as the "Eagle of Lille" and was widely regarded as one of the best pilots in the war.

The Death of Max Immelmann

Tragically, Immelmann's career was cut short when he was killed in action on June 18, 1916. He was shot down by a British aircraft while flying over the Somme River.
