One such pilot was Colonel Robert "Bob" Friend, who flew with the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Friend was born in New York City in 1921 to a Jewish family. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1943. After completing flight training, Friend was assigned to the 332nd Fighter Group, the famed "Tuskegee Airmen." The Tuskegee Airmen were the first all-black fighter squadron in the U.S. military, and they distinguished themselves in combat during World War II.

Friend flew 143 combat missions during World War II, and he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and the Purple Heart. After the war, Friend continued to serve in the U.S. Air Force, and he eventually retired as a colonel in 1971. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 97.
