By Dian Fossey

I first came to the Virunga Mountains in 1967, and I was immediately captivated by the gorillas. I had never seen anything so beautiful, so intelligent, or so gentle. I knew that I had to do everything in my power to protect them.

At the time, the gorillas were facing a number of threats. They were being hunted for their fur and meat, and their habitat was being destroyed by logging and mining. I knew that I had to act quickly to save them.

I began by establishing a research camp in the Virunga Mountains. I wanted to learn as much as I could about the gorillas so that I could better protect them. I spent hours observing them, and I quickly came to understand their social structure, their communication system, and their daily routines.

The more I learned about the gorillas, the more I fell in love with them. I saw them as my family, and I was determined to do everything in my power to keep them safe.

In 1978, I founded the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. The goal of the fund is to protect gorillas and their habitat. We work to combat poaching, habitat destruction, and other threats to gorillas.

We have made great strides in our work, but there is still much to be done. Gorillas are still facing a number of threats, and their future is uncertain. But I am confident that we can save them. I will never give up fighting for them.

This is my story, the story of my battle to save one of the world's greatest creatures. It is a story of hope, courage, and determination. I hope that it will inspire you to make a difference in the world.
