Species Overview
Piranhas belong to the family Characidae, which also includes tetras and pacus. They are native to the Our Book Library and Orinoco River basins in South America. There are over 60 known species of piranhas, ranging in size from the tiny red-bellied piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) to the massive black piranha (Serrasalmus rhombeus).
Piranhas are known for their aggressive feeding behavior. They are carnivores that primarily feed on fish, insects, and small animals. Their powerful jaws and razor-sharp teeth allow them to tear through flesh with ease.
Tank Setup
Piranhas require a spacious tank to thrive. The minimum tank size for a group of small piranhas is 55 gallons, while larger species may need a tank of 100 gallons or more. The tank should be furnished with plenty of hiding places, such as rocks, driftwood, and plants.
The water temperature in the tank should be kept between 75-85°F (24-29°C). Piranhas prefer slightly acidic water with a pH of 5.0-6.5. A powerful filter is essential to keep the water clean, as piranhas produce a lot of waste.
Feeding
Piranhas are carnivores and require a protein-rich diet. You can feed them live fish, frozen fish, or commercial piranha food. It is important to avoid feeding piranhas raw meat, as this can contain harmful bacteria.
Piranhas should be fed small amounts several times a day. Adult piranhas can be fed once or twice a day, while younger piranhas may need to be fed more frequently.
Behavior
Piranhas are social animals that live in groups called shoals. They are very territorial and will defend their territory against other fish. Piranhas can also be aggressive towards each other, especially if they are kept in a tank that is too small or not properly furnished.
It is important to keep piranhas in a group of at least six individuals. This will help to distribute aggression and reduce the risk of cannibalism.
Health and Disease
Piranhas are generally hardy fish, but they are susceptible to a number of diseases, including bacterial infections, fungal infections, and parasites. It is important to keep the water in your piranha tank clean and to quarantine any new fish before adding them to the main tank.
If you suspect that your piranha is sick, it is important to seek veterinary attention as soon as possible.
Piranhas can make fascinating pets, but they are not for everyone. They require a large tank, a specialized diet, and proper care. If you are considering keeping piranhas, it is important to do your research and make sure that you are prepared to provide the necessary care.
With proper care, piranhas can live for many years and bring you years of enjoyment.
