The Algonquian-Speaking Tribes

The Algonquian-speaking tribes formed one of the largest linguistic groups in the Northeast, occupying vast territories from the Atlantic coast to the Great Lakes. Notable Algonquian nations included the Abenaki, Delaware, Lenape, and Ojibwe. These tribes shared cultural similarities, such as a reliance on hunting, fishing, and agriculture, as well as a rich oral tradition and spiritual beliefs connected to nature.

The Iroquois Confederacy

The Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the League of Five Nations, was a powerful alliance of five Iroquoian-speaking tribes: the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Mohawk. Formed around the 15th century, the Confederacy established a sophisticated political and social system based on consensus and mutual support. The Iroquois were skilled farmers, hunters, and traders, and their influence extended far beyond their homelands.
