  • Approximately 50 yards of worsted weight yarn
  • Size 8 (5mm) knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:

4 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch

Finished Size:

Approximately 12 inches in circumference and 6 inches deep

Skill Level:

Easy

Pattern Instructions:

Ribbed Brim:

  1. Cast on 90 stitches.
  2. Knit 2, purl 2 around for 10 rows.

Body:

  1. Knit in the round without ribbing for 30 rounds.

Earflaps:

  1. Divide the stitches into three equal sections of 30 stitches each.
  2. Place a marker at the beginning of each section.
  3. Knit across the first section, then place the stitches on hold on a cable needle.
  4. Knit across the second section, then place the stitches on hold on a cable needle.
  5. Knit across the third section, then join the stitches from the cable needles.
  6. Knit 5 more rounds without dividing the stitches.

Decrease Rows:

  1. Round 1: Knit 2, knit 2 together, repeat around.
  2. Round 2: Knit around.
  3. Rounds 3-5: Repeat Rounds 1 and 2.

Bind Off:

  1. Knit 2 together around until there are only 6 stitches remaining.
  2. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.
  3. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the bonnet.

Finishing:

Weave in any loose ends and block the bonnet to shape.
