The attacks began on July 1, when 12-year-old Charles Vansant was swimming in the ocean off Beach Haven, New Jersey. A shark suddenly attacked, biting him on the leg. Vansant was able to fight off the shark and swim back to shore, but he later died from his injuries.
Just a few days later, on July 6, 25-year-old Charles Bruder was swimming in the ocean off Spring Lake, New Jersey, when he was attacked by a shark. Bruder was bitten on the leg and arm, and he died from his injuries shortly after.
The third attack occurred on July 12, when 32-year-old Lester Stillwell was swimming in the ocean off Matawan, New Jersey. A shark attacked Stillwell, biting him on the leg and arm. Stillwell was able to fight off the shark and swim back to shore, but he later died from his injuries.
The fourth and final attack occurred on July 22, when 24-year-old Joseph Dunn was swimming in the ocean off Perth Amboy, New Jersey. A shark attacked Dunn, biting him on the leg. Dunn was able to fight off the shark and swim back to shore, but he later died from his injuries.
In addition to the four fatal attacks, there was also one non-fatal attack that occurred during the summer of 1916. On July 10, 14-year-old Robert Wilson was swimming in the ocean off Sea Girt, New Jersey, when he was attacked by a shark. Wilson was bitten on the leg, but he was able to fight off the shark and swim back to shore. Wilson survived his injuries.
The shark attacks of 1916 were a terrifying event that shocked the nation. The attacks led to a widespread fear of swimming in the ocean, and they also prompted a number of changes in the way that people thought about sharks.
In the years since the attacks, there have been a number of books written about the event. However, Richard Fernicola's book, Survived, is the first book to tell the story of the attacks from the perspective of the survivors. Fernicola spent years interviewing the survivors and their families, and he has compiled a gripping and unforgettable account of their experiences.
Survived is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the history of shark attacks or in the stories of those who have survived them. It is a powerful and moving book that will stay with you long after you finish it.
