Orfalea begins his book with a personal story about his own family's immigration to the United States from Lebanon. He describes the challenges his parents faced as they tried to make a new life for themselves in a strange land. They worked long hours at low-paying jobs, and they often felt isolated and alone. But they were determined to provide a better future for their children, and they instilled in them the importance of education and hard work.
Orfalea's story is just one of many that he tells in Diaspora Children. He interviews dozens of immigrant families from all over the world, and he paints a vivid portrait of the challenges they face. He writes about the difficulties of learning a new language, the pain of leaving behind family and friends, and the discrimination that many immigrants experience. But he also writes about the resilience and determination of these families. He shows how they overcome adversity and build new lives for themselves in their adopted country.
Diaspora Children is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the immigrant experience in America. It is a powerful and moving account of the challenges and triumphs of these families as they navigate the complexities of living in a new country. Orfalea's book is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of the American dream.
Excerpt from Diaspora Children
"I remember the day my parents told me we were moving to America. I was 10 years old, and I didn't want to leave my home. I didn't want to leave my friends or my school. But my parents said that we had to go. They said that there was no future for us in Lebanon. The war had destroyed our country, and there was no work. They said that in America, we would have a better life. We would have opportunities that we could never have in Lebanon. I didn't want to believe them. I didn't want to leave my home. But I knew that I had to go. So I said goodbye to my friends and my school, and I got on the plane with my parents. I didn't know what the future held, but I knew that I had to be brave. I had to make a new life for myself in a new country.
The first few years in America were difficult. I didn't speak English, and I didn't know anyone. I felt lost and alone. But I was determined to succeed. I studied hard, and I made new friends. I got a job, and I started to build a new life for myself. It wasn't easy, but I did it. I am now a successful businessman, and I am grateful for the opportunities that America has given me. I am proud to be an American, and I am proud of my Lebanese heritage. I am a diaspora child, and I am living the American dream."
