Early Life and Career
Raymond Carver was born in Clatskanie, Oregon, in 1938. He grew up in a working-class family, and his father worked as a logger. Carver began writing poetry at a young age, and he published his first poem in a literary magazine when he was 18 years old.
After graduating from high school, Carver attended Humboldt State University in California. He dropped out of college after two years and moved to San Francisco, where he worked as a janitor and a clerk. In 1961, Carver married Maryann Burkhardt, and they had two children together.
Carver continued to write poetry during this time, and he published his first collection of poems, Near Klamath, in 1968. The book was a critical success, and it helped to establish Carver as a rising star in the American literary scene.
Middle Years and Success
In the 1970s, Carver published two more collections of poems, Winter Insomnia (1975) and At Night the Salmon Move (1976). These books solidified Carver's reputation as one of the most important poets of his generation. Carver's poems were praised for their beauty, their truthfulness, and their ability to speak to the human condition.
In 1981, Carver published his first collection of short stories, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. The book was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to introduce Carver to a wider audience. Carver continued to publish short stories and poems throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and he became one of the most celebrated writers in America.
Later Years and Death
In 1994, Carver was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died in 1988, at the age of 50. Carver's death was a great loss to the literary world, but his work continues to be read and admired by people around the world.
