In her memoir Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Lee Israel recounts her journey from respected literary biographer to forger and thief. Israel's story is a fascinating and disturbing look into the life of a woman who was both brilliant and deeply flawed.
Israel began her career as a successful biographer, writing books about Dorothy Parker, Lillian Hellman, and Estée Lauder. But after her career faltered in the 1990s, she turned to forgery to make ends meet. She began by forging letters from famous authors, such as Ernest Hemingway and Noel Coward, and selling them to collectors. But as her forgeries became more daring, she eventually crossed the line into theft, stealing letters from libraries and archives.
Israel's memoir is a gripping account of her life of crime. She writes with honesty and self-awareness about her motivations, her fears, and her regrets. She also provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of forgery and theft, and the people who inhabit it.
Can You Ever Forgive Me? is a must-read for fans of true crime and literary fiction. It is a complex and moving story about a woman who was both brilliant and deeply flawed. Israel's memoir is a reminder that even the most talented people can be capable of great crimes, and that redemption is always possible.
